$Catching up on @sjdooley Fashion’s Dirty Secret and feeling heartbroken and pretty sheepish. I urge anyone who buys clothes ( and that’s everyone) to watch this programme and I defy you not to question what you buy and how you view fashion. We all know that the concept of “sustainability” in fashion is at the forefront right now and rightly so as the health and environmental future of our planet and populations depends on it. We as makers and sellers, need also to take a long hard look at our processes in relation to profit and do our part to making a better future. This sculpture we saw @tateliverpool entitled “ Venus of the Rags by Michelangelo Pistoletto ( 1967, 1974) brilliantly “ illustrates just one part of this colossal problem. In short our rampant overconsumption, particularly of throwaway, disposable items. The #buylessbuybetter movement only addresses a fraction of issues here but along with better, more ecological manufacturing processes and a realistic expectation on what garments cost to make ethically and cleanly its a start.... Changing attitudes won’t happen overnight but I hope when my children are my age, the fast fashion bubble will have popped and more considered and modest attitude towards buying will be the norm.
